Northern Beaches Wedding Photography Guide — Best Venues & Photo Locations
If you’re planning a wedding on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, you’re already starting with one of the best backdrops a wedding photographer could ask for.
From the harbour and heritage buildings of Manly to the cliffs, beaches and Pittwater sunsets around Palm Beach, the Northern Beaches gives us an incredible mix of locations within a relatively small area.
As a Sydney wedding photography team, we’ve photographed weddings and couples throughout the Northern Beaches for many years. One thing we love about this part of Sydney is that you don’t need to travel all over the city to create variety in your wedding photos.
Beach. Bush. Clifftop. Harbour. Historic buildings. Open parkland. Sunset over Pittwater.
It’s all here.
So if you’re looking for a Northern Beaches wedding photographer, or you’re still deciding where to have your ceremony, reception or wedding photos, here are some of our favourite areas to consider.
Why We Love Northern Beaches Wedding Photography
Wedding photography on the Northern Beaches has a very different feeling from photographing in the Sydney CBD.
It’s more relaxed.
There’s more open space, more natural light and plenty of opportunities for candid wedding photography without making the day feel like one long photoshoot.
For us, that’s important.
The best wedding photography isn’t just about taking beautiful portraits. It’s about documenting what actually happens — the nerves before the ceremony, your parents’ reactions, your friends laughing, the wind catching your veil and all those little moments you didn’t even realise were happening.
Then, when the light is right, we’ll steal you away for some beautiful portraits.
That’s our favourite balance: real moments mixed with creative wedding photography.
1. Manly
- Chiara and Les exploring the heart of Manly for something a little different from the classic beach wedding photo.
- Chiara and Les taking a walk through Manly for some relaxed wedding portraits away from the beach.
Manly is probably the most versatile wedding photography area on the Northern Beaches.
Within a relatively compact area you have Manly Beach, Shelly Beach, Cabbage Tree Bay, Manly Cove, the wharf, sandstone architecture, harbour views and plenty of smaller streets and corners that can create completely different looks.
For couples who want a mixture of beach wedding photography and urban-style portraits, Manly is hard to beat.
Best for:
Beach photos, harbour views, sunset, candid walking photos and couples who want plenty of variety.
Photography tip:
Manly can get extremely busy, particularly on warm weekends. Good timing and knowing where to move away from the crowds makes a huge difference.
2. Q Station, Manly
- Serena and Scott’s first kiss at their waterfront wedding ceremony at Q Station Manly.
- Sofia and Haydon sharing their first dance surrounded by family and friends at Q Station Manly.
Q Station is one of the most distinctive wedding locations on the Northern Beaches.
Instead of having only a beach backdrop, you get heritage buildings, old roads, bushland, sandstone, the wharf and views across Sydney Harbour.
That variety makes it particularly good for storytelling.
We can photograph preparations, ceremony, family photos and portraits without needing to spend a large part of your wedding day travelling between locations.
For candid wedding photography, this is exactly the type of venue we like — couples can spend more time with their guests while we document the day naturally.
Best for:
Heritage atmosphere, waterfront weddings, bushland and couples wanting everything close together.
3. Shelly Beach & Cabbage Tree Bay

Coco and Brent by the water during their wedding at The Boathouse Shelly Beach.
Shelly Beach feels completely different from the main stretch of Manly Beach.
The water is generally calmer visually, the surrounding headland gives us interesting backgrounds, and the walk between Manly and Shelly Beach creates plenty of opportunities for natural photographs along the way.
Rather than stopping every few metres and posing, we often prefer to let couples walk, talk and enjoy a little time together.
Those in-between moments frequently become some of our favourite photographs.
Best for:
Relaxed couples, smaller weddings, natural portraits and late-afternoon photography.
4. Freshwater Beach
Freshwater is a beautiful option if you want the Northern Beaches look without being right in the middle of Manly.
You have the beach, rock formations, headlands and elevated views all within the area.
Nearby Pilu at Freshwater is also one of the Northern Beaches’ established beachside wedding venues, with ocean views and a private garden setting.
From a wedding photography perspective, Freshwater gives us plenty of opportunities to create elegant portraits and relaxed candid photographs without travelling far from the reception.
Best for:
Elegant beach weddings, intimate celebrations and ocean-view portraits.
5. Long Reef Headland
- Chiara and Les exchanging vows by the ocean at sunrise at Long Reef.
- Chiara reading her vows to Les during their intimate Long Reef sunrise wedding.
- Chiara and Les silhouetted against the sunrise at Long Reef after their beach wedding ceremony.
- Emma and Josh taking a few minutes by the ocean after their ceremony at Long Reef Golf Club.
- A little quiet moment away from the party for Emma and Josh at Long Reef Golf Club.
- Emma and Josh hitting the dance floor for the first time as a married couple.
- Josh watching on during Emma’s father-daughter dance — one of those little moments happening away from the centre of attention.
- Emma and her dad sharing their father-daughter dance at Long Reef Golf Club.
Long Reef is one of our favourite Northern Beaches locations when the weather and light cooperate.
The open headland gives photographs a completely different feeling from shooting down at beach level.
There’s sky, ocean, grassland and huge open views.
On a windy afternoon it can also create fantastic movement in a wedding dress or veil.
Of course, being exposed also means wind and weather need to be considered. Sometimes the conditions that look less than perfect on a weather app actually create the most dramatic photographs.
Best for:
Epic landscapes, sunset portraits, dramatic skies and couples who don’t mind a little wind.
6. Mona Vale Headland
Mona Vale gives you another great combination of elevated ocean views and beach scenery.
The headland has plenty of open space and panoramic views along the coastline, making it particularly useful for larger wedding parties and ceremonies.
It also gives your photographer room to work with longer lenses and create images where the couple feels small against the landscape.
Best for:
Outdoor ceremonies, coastal portraits and larger bridal parties.
7. Bayview, Pittwater & Church Point
- A quiet moment for Jennifer and Benny while the wedding reception carries on downstairs.
- Jennifer and Benny hanging out with their bridal party by the water at Church Point.
- Jennifer and Benny taking some time by the water for their couple portraits after the ceremony.
- Jennifer and Benny celebrating during their waterfront wedding ceremony at Pasadena Sydney, Church Point.
Once you move towards the Pittwater side of the Northern Beaches, the visual character changes again.
Instead of crashing ocean waves, you get calmer water, boats, jetties and beautiful views towards Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
Bayview Park is one option for waterfront ceremonies, while BYRA — Bayview Yacht Racing Association offers a relaxed waterfront setting where ceremonies and receptions can be held in the same location.
Another standout is Pasadena Sydney at Church Point, a waterfront wedding venue overlooking Pittwater. Couples can have their ceremony and reception in the one location, with the water, marina and surrounding bushland providing plenty of options for wedding photography without needing to travel far between locations.
This side of the peninsula can also be fantastic later in the day because of the direction of the afternoon light.
Best for:
Waterfront weddings, relaxed celebrations, boats, Pittwater views and sunset photography.
8. Whale Beach

Amanda and Tim making their exit through a tunnel of sparklers at their Moby Dicks Whale Beach wedding reception.
Whale Beach is beautiful because it feels a little more removed from the busier parts of Sydney.
The beach, surrounding headlands and Norfolk pines give photographers several different elements to work with.
Nearby Jonah’s sits above Whale Beach and is one of the area’s best-known wedding venues, with ocean views from its clifftop location.
For smaller weddings where the couple wants beautiful scenery and a more intimate atmosphere, this part of the Northern Beaches is worth considering.
Best for:
Intimate weddings, ocean views, luxury celebrations and coastal wedding photography.
9. Palm Beach
- Samantha and Ben celebrating their wedding at Bible Garden, overlooking beautiful Palm Beach.
- Emma and Luke’s waterfront wedding ceremony at Palm Beach Golf Club, with beautiful views across Pittwater.
- That just-married feeling! Emma and Luke walking back down the aisle together after their Palm Beach wedding ceremony.
- A quiet moment together by Pittwater after the ceremony.
- Beautiful afternoon light for Emma and Luke’s Palm Beach wedding portraits.
- A few quiet minutes inside Palm Beach Golf Club before the reception and party begin.
- Emma and Luke catching the last light of the day by the water at Palm Beach.
- Up it goes! Emma’s bouquet toss during the reception at Palm Beach Golf Club.
Palm Beach is one of those locations where we could photograph for hours — although we definitely don’t recommend disappearing for hours on your wedding day!
You have the ocean side, Pittwater side, parks, jetties, sand, headlands and plenty of greenery.
The important part is choosing locations based on your wedding timeline rather than trying to visit everything.
Station Beach Reserve, for example, faces Pittwater and gives you a completely different look from the ocean side of Palm Beach.
Nearby reception venues also mean we can usually plan portraits without turning your wedding photography into a major road trip.
Best for:
Destination-style weddings, beach ceremonies, Pittwater sunsets and couples wanting a relaxed coastal feel.
10. Northern Beaches Parks, Reserves & Headlands
Some of the best Northern Beaches wedding photography locations aren’t traditional wedding venues at all.
Local parks, reserves and headlands can make beautiful ceremony and portrait locations.
The Northern Beaches Council allows wedding bookings at a range of beaches, parks and reserves, although availability and restrictions vary between locations.
If you’re considering an outdoor ceremony, check the booking requirements early — particularly for popular dates and locations.
And always have a wet-weather plan.
Sydney weather doesn’t care how long you’ve been planning your wedding. 🙂
What Time Is Best for Northern Beaches Wedding Photos?
This is one of the most important things to consider.
Beautiful location + bad timing can still equal difficult photography.
Whenever possible, we like to schedule some couple portraits later in the afternoon when the sunlight becomes softer.
The exact timing changes throughout the year, so we normally work backwards from sunset when helping our couples plan their photography timeline.
You don’t necessarily need an hour-long sunset photoshoot either.
Sometimes 10–15 minutes of beautiful light is all we need.
We would much rather take you out for a short session at the right time than keep you away from your guests for an hour.
What If It Rains?
Don’t panic.
Some of our favourite wedding photographs have been created in weather that wasn’t exactly what the couple had ordered.
Clouds give us softer light. Wet roads create reflections. Wind creates movement. And sometimes a break in the weather gives us an incredible sky for only a few minutes.
A good Northern Beaches wedding photographer should be thinking about backup locations, light direction and weather throughout the day — not only when everything goes according to plan.
Our advice is simple:
Have a backup plan, but don’t let the forecast take over your wedding.
How Much Time Should We Allow for Wedding Photography?
There’s no single answer because every wedding is different.
But one mistake we often see is couples trying to fit too many photography locations into a short period.
If you have 90 minutes available and spend 50 minutes driving and parking, you don’t really have a 90-minute photoshoot.
Usually, fewer locations + more time to actually enjoy them = better photographs.
When Team Divon helps plan a wedding timeline, we consider:
- Travel and parking
- Family photo time
- Size of the bridal party
- Sunset time
- Ceremony and reception locations
- Traffic
- Whether you want a first look
- How much time you actually want to spend with your guests
Wedding photography should fit around your wedding — not the other way around.
Candid Wedding Photography on the Northern Beaches
Our approach at Divon Photography is a mixture of candid wedding photography, storytelling and creative portraiture.
During the important moments, we don’t want to constantly interrupt what’s happening.
We’d rather capture the laugh.
The tear.
The look between your parents.
Your friends doing something ridiculous behind you.
Then when it’s time for portraits, we’ll give you direction when you need it.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
That’s our job.
Your job is to get married and enjoy the day.
Looking for a Northern Beaches Wedding Photographer?
Divon Photography is a Sydney wedding photography and videography team photographing weddings across Manly, Freshwater, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Bayview, Newport, Whale Beach, Palm Beach and throughout the Northern Beaches.
We’ve been photographing weddings since 2008, and our work has received recognition in Australian and international photography competitions.
But awards aren’t what make a wedding photograph important.
Twenty years from now, the photograph you’ll care about most might simply be the one of your mum looking at you before you walk down the aisle.
That’s why our approach combines beautiful portraits with the little unscripted moments happening around them.
If you’re planning a Northern Beaches wedding and would like to talk about photography, videography or how to structure your wedding-day timeline, we’d love to hear what you’re planning.
Tell us about your wedding and let’s create something that feels like you.
